Company Background

Astro Numeric Service started in 1966 as a computer service to astrologers for chart calculations. The world was a lot different then... Few astrologers had access to computers and no comprehensive chart calculation programs existed. Our service was hardly welcomed with open arms. Astrologers were at first very skeptical, and for many the first computerized charts were a source of embarrassment -- exposing numerous errors in previous hand calculations. But soon the labor saving side of the service became obvious and ANS became the workhorse of many professional astrologers who could double and triple the number of clients they saw.

Computer buffs will be amazed to know that, in those early days, ANS operations were very much like today's internet. We entered all the birth and order information into a terminal which transmitted data through a telephone line at the incredible rate of about 10 characters per second! This data went to a large computer (occupying an entire floor of an office building) which printed out all our charts to mail out to customers the next day.

The 1980s saw the personal computer revolution, and professional astrologers were among the first to embrace this new technology. Many of our early customers began to do their own charts on the ubiquitous DOS PC. Astro Numeric Service continued to grow, however, by serving the growing ranks of "amateur" astrologers -- those knowledgeable of the rather complex symbolism of astrology, but not active enough to justify their own computer system.

About the same time, ANS took on what has to be one of the most exciting consumer products in astrology - Astro*Carto*Graphy. The Astro*Carto*Graphy kit developed by Jim Lewis popularized a new "do-it-yourself" style of astrology. Instead of relying totally on a professional astrologer to tell you what your chart meant, Lewis wanted everyone, in the spirit of "self-exploration", to learn for themselves what astrology meant. Read a book, do some traveling, talk with others... Astro*Carto*Graphy was as much a regimen or lifestyle than a charting technique. In any case, ANS, which had produced all Astro*Carto*Graphy maps since 1975, became the exclusive distributor of the maps in the mid 1980s and continues to be so now.

Astro Numeric Service moved from California to Ashland, Oregon in 1991. Here we live a blessed existence, isolated by mountains all around us, yet connected to you by an airport, highway and the internet. And, as the twenty-first century sweeps upon us, Astro Numeric Service is now facing another challenge: How do we serve you, our interested customer, in a world absolutely swarming with computerized charts and horoscopes? This web site is part of the answer. In it we hope to provide you with a new level of service, honesty, simplicity, and above all, quality.
